Do I Need a Top Cap on My Glass Balustrade?
It all begins with an idea.
If you're installing a frameless glass balustrade, you’ve probably heard of top caps — but do you actually need one?
🔹 Under 1 metre fall?
In most cases, no top cap is required. We install 12mm or 13.52mm toughened safety glass that meets NZ building standards for decks, stairs, and balconies under 1m.
🔹 Over 1 metre fall?
Yep, you’ll likely need a slim aluminium or stainless steel top rail. It adds extra structural support and keeps your glass compliant for council sign-off.
We’ll let you know what’s required when we do your free quote — no guesswork needed.
Based in Whangamata, Coastline Glass installs balustrades across the Coromandel – including Whitianga, Tairua, and Thames.
